The best of INFO - A year in review

As this year draws to close all of us at the INFO project want to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a happy new year.  As we leap into 2008, INFO would like to take a look back at the top ten family planning and reproductive health related stories and events we shared with you the throughout 2007.  The top 10 items below all appeared in our blog this past year.  In descending order:

How do you say “Family Planning” in Kannada?

Dr. Kumar counseling clientsKannada is spoken in Southern India’s Karnataka province, famously home to booming Bangalore, aka South Asia’s Silicone Valley. Bangalore appears to be booming, given its roaring new-economy growth of 8% per year, but the city’s “crumbling” infrastructure and poor surrounding regions are suffering. It’s no wonder, given the city and surrounding state’s rapid growth in population.

So, then, how do you say “Family Planning” in Kannada?

Actually, the translation work has been done–that is, job aids, checklists and guidance on methods from the Family Planning: A Global Handbook for Providers have already been translated into Kannada under the guidance of Chief Medical Officer Dr. K. Ravi Kumar (counseling clients above right).

On Air: PRI’s New Global Health Focus

on-air.jpgPublic Radio International (PRI) recently announced a three-year $5 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to disseminate news on global health.

The Morning Show, a new program premiering in 2008, will partner PRI and WNYC with the BBC WOrld Service, the New York Times, and WGBH Boston to provide a platform for coverage of issues such as drug-resistant TB, staph infection, the search for HIV/AIDS vaccines, and the environment. Other programming with an increased global health focus will include PRI’s “The World.”

FDA requires manufacturers to add warning to nonoxynol 9

spermicideThe United States Food and Drug Administration has just mandated that over-the-counter manufacturers place warning labels on nonoxynol 9 spermicide. The warning labels will state that nonoxynol 9 as a stand-alone spermicide does not protect against HIV or sexually transmitted diseases.   The warning also will state that vaginal irritation may occur as a result of N9 use.
