Tobacco could kill 1 billion by 2100

No smokingHere at CCP and INFO we mostly talk about reproductive health, however several of our CCP staff are involved in global tobacco control work as part of the Bloomberg Global Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use.   Michael Bloomberg, the mayor of New York city has pledged $125 million to aid in global tobacco control.  The initiative focuses on tobacco control in 15 key countries where smoking rates are the highest.  The initiative has named five partner organizations to work on in-country tobacco control and awarding grants to smaller organizations.  The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is one of the partner organizations, and CCP has been working with several country teams on tobacco behavior change campaigns.

Irina Yacobson on Training

We recently interviewed Irina Yacobson for our Elements of Successful Family Planning Programs site. Dr. Yacobson has had extensive experience training providers in developing countries and currently serves as the assistant medical director at FHI. In this interview she shares her insights on the types of training necessary in many countries. She speaks to the importance of informed voluntary choice and client-driven choices. 5th International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGC

On February 6th, I attended a great symposium titled, “Lessons Learned from over a Decade of Evaluating Approaches to Encourage the Abandonment of FGM/C”, organized by Population Council’s Frontiers Project. The Symposium highlighted the evaluation of a number of interventions throughout the last 10 years, highlighting work done by Tostan.

The Population Council’s FRONTIERS Program has documented 10 lessons to successfully bring about change in the practice of female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C). They include:
