FDA requires manufacturers to add warning to nonoxynol 9

spermicideThe United States Food and Drug Administration has just mandated that over-the-counter manufacturers place warning labels on nonoxynol 9 spermicide. The warning labels will state that nonoxynol 9 as a stand-alone spermicide does not protect against HIV or sexually transmitted diseases.   The warning also will state that vaginal irritation may occur as a result of N9 use.

According to the FDA, past studies in Thailand and Africa have showed that women who used N9 may be at increased risk for contracting HIV.

Such a warning label may hopefully help inform consumers and correct some of the myths and misperceptions they maintain regarding stand-alone spermicides and dual protection.
