Diarrhea is the second leading killer of children under the age of five, accounting for approximately 15% of under-five child deaths worldwide, or almost two million deaths annually. Learners who complete this course will be able to:
- Describe the magnitude of diarrheal diseases among children under the age of five in developing countries
- Explain the main principles of diarrhea case management in young children
- Identify ways to prevent diarrhea in young children and address obstacles that must be overcome to do so

Although saving children's lives from diarrhea using oral rehydration therapy has been and continues to be a major focus, new advances include improved (low osmolarity) oral rehydration salts, zinc, and point-of-use water treatment.
