The Global Health eLearning Center is pleased to offer this course on Maternal Survival - Programming Issues. This course presents the current situation of maternal mortality and disability globally, some high impact interventions for reducing maternal mortality and disability, and key issues involved in programming to improve services and save lives.

This course covers topics such as:

  • Background and Progress – A delineation of "what really works" to reduce maternal mortality has been slow to come.
  • High Impact Clinical Interventions – Select evidence-based interventions are directly linked to maternal mortality reduction.
  • Essential Health System Interventions – Even high impact interventions cannot be implemented unless a strong health system supports those services.
  • Programming Issues – A number of crucial issues surrounding the design, development, and implementation of maternal health care have slowed the development of a concerted effort toward the goal.
  • Quality Care – The issue of quality is one element that requires programming attention.
  • Access to Care – Likewise, programming for access is vital to the utilization of services.
  • Measuring Progress – Finally, measurement and evaluation are essential to the development and improvement of services.
