  • The contribution of PPH to maternal mortality globally

  • The causes of PPH
     
  • Healthy practices during pregnancy that can help prevent mortality from PPH

  • Active management of the third stage of labor (AMTSL), the key evidence-based practice for preventing PPH

  • Vigilant monitoring of the "fourth stage" of labor (immediately postpartum)

  • Country-level implementation of an AMTSL component

This course highlights key ways to ensure birth preparedness and complication readiness, and to prevent prolonged labor. It also discusses the need for community advocacy and addresses emerging issues related to preventing PPH (e.g., the use of uterotonic misoprostol by traditional birth attendants).
