Users can now go directly to www.igwg.org to access IGWG's publications and tools, find a wealth of gender-related links, and learn about the organization and its upcoming events, trainings, and grants. Come back to the site in the next couple of weeks for updated information on the training and grants pages. Our latest postings include a report on whether integrating a gender focus into reproductive health programs makes a difference to outcomes and a powerpoint presentation that discusses some of the findings in the report.
New e-mail list about sexual violence
You are invited to join the SVRI list, an e-mail forum of the Sexual Violence Research Initiative (SVRI). SVRI is a project which aims to create a network of experienced and committed researchers, policy makers, activists and donors who will work together to ensure that the many aspects of sexual violence are addressed. The objective of SVRI is to promote and disseminate action-oriented research to reduce and respond to sexual violence through: Identifying gaps, building capacity, supporting research, raising awareness and building partnerships.
The SVRI will focus on the sexual abuse and coercion of adult and adolescent women, child sexual abuse, sexual torture and sexual violence in war situations, and trafficking in women and girls for sex. The SVRI is funded by the Global Forum for Health Research (GFHR) and currently hosted by the World Health Organization (WHO). For more information about and to join the Sexual Violence Research Initiative please look at: http://www.who.int/gender/violence/sexviolresearch/en/
AIMS of SVRI list
The aim of this list is to provide a forum where knowledge, experience and action about sexual violence can be discussed and shared. This will be a global discussion and we hope to learn from people in all regions of the world. We hope that these discussions will facilitate the formation of new partnerships and promote discourse among people from different professions about sexual violence.
Content
The SVRI list is a moderated forum. In addition to sharing information about the SVRI and its work as well as the work of others, we will engage in group discussions around specific issues relating to sexual violence research. We hope that most of these discussions will be initiated by group members. A number of issues for discussion have already been identified including - Definitions of sexual violence and - Ethical issues in conducting sexual violence research
We look forward to a series of informative and meaningful discussions on issues related to sexual violence research. If you have any messages to send to the list please email SVRI@who.int
Please forward this to anyone who may be interested in joining the list. To sign on please send an e-mail with the words: SUBSCRIBE SVRI followed by your name (for example SUBSCRIBE SVRI Mary Smith) to LISTSERV@WHO.INT

New Pan American Health Organization Publication
http://publications.paho.org/english/moreinfo.cfm?Product_ID=691&CFID=6423902&CFTOKEN=671785
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Regional Office of the World Health Organization (WHO) for the Americas has recently published:
"Violence Against Women: The Health Sector Responds" which focuses on gender-based violence-and how communities can put an end to it. The book's production, a collaborative effort with the Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the World Health Organization (WHO), shares the findings of PAHO's early research into the health situation of women, what they revealed about the extent of gender-based violence, and the launching in 1995 of a pilot project in Central America to address this issue. Most revealing of all, however, is the voices of the women themselves, as they describe living with violence and the community's response to their needs. The book's final chapter presents a global perspective on how the lessons learned in Central America and PAHO's integrated strategy may be applied in other communities around the world.

Sexual and gender-based violence is one of the main areas of the research conducted at the International Centre for Reproductive Health at the Ghent University. Personally I am mainly focusing on the rights-based and gender approach of sexual and reproductive health of women and children affected by war and armed conflict. In these contexts, SGBV is one of our main issues of concern. In this respect I am also collaborating as an external expert with the UN Inter-agency Task Force on Gender and Humanitarian Action.
