Searching Specific Fields

The following chart contains all fields that are searchable on the “More Search Options” page, along with the information they contain, the types of resource records containing the field, and specific search tips for that field:

Keywords	Standardized subject headings listed in the One Source thesaurus	Documents; Photos; Communication Materials; Organizations/Websties	Enclose multiple-word keywords in quotation marks. Search on keyword stems to broaden your search (Fertility* will retrieve records on Fertility Rate and Fertility Incentives.
Title or Photo Caption	Original/translated English title; orginal/translated non-English title; Photo caption	Documents; Photos; Communication Materials	Enclose title phrases in quotation marks, e.g., "domestic violence". To find resources in a language other than English, search for title/caption words & phrases in that language as well as English.
Author or Organization	Personal author; Corporate author; Organization name; Film/video director	Documents; Communication Materials; Organizations/Websites	To be sure to find all forms of a name, search on last name only. To narrow, search on full name with given name first initial and enclose in quotation marks, e.g., "Smith T"
Photographer	Photographer	Photos	To be sure to find all forms of photographer name, search on last name only. To narrow, search on full name with given name first and enclose in quotation marks, e.g., "Aaron Brady"
Journal Title	Title of Journal, Newsletter, or Newspaper	Documents	Search on full title of journal minus initial article, enclosed in quotation marks, e.g., "AIDS Care". Or, search on a phrase from title of journal, enclosed in quotation marks, e.g., "Journal of the American"
Abstract / Description	Abstract; description of Communication Materials & Organizations/Websites	Documents	Search on individual words or on phrases enclosed in quotation marks. If you want to find abstracts or descriptions with two or more words/phrases, separate with “AND”.
Photo City	Site of Photo	Photos	Enter city name without country name.
Related Project	Project that is subject of photo	Photos	Search on word(s) or phrase from project name. Enclose phrases in quotation marks.
Publication Information	Place of publication, name of published, publication date. For parts of documents, such as book chapters, includes title and editor/compiler of whole document.	Documents	Search on words or phrases from publisher name, words or phrases from whole document title, or last name(s) of editor(s)/compiler(s). Enclose phrases in quotation marks. Search on publication year in combination with one of the other elements listed above.
Volume	Volume number of Journal, Newsletter, or Newspaper.	Documents	Enter all number as Arabic numbers. Use in combination with other fields, such as journal title. Enter Volume search in separate search box.
Issue	Issue number of Journal, Newsletter, or Newspaper.	Documents	Enter all number as Arabic numbers. Use in combination with other fields, such as journal title. Enter Issue search in separate search box.
Region / Subregion / Country	For Documents, the country/region the item is ABOUT. For Photos, Communication Materials, Organizations/Websties, the country/region the item is FROM.	Documents; Photos; Communication Materials; Organizations/Websties	The selection list is ordered by region & subregion first; then by individual country names. Hold down the CTRL key to select/deselect multiple entries from the list. The search will combine the Region/Subregion/Country with the “OR” operator. Selecting a region, such as AFRICA, will find records with AFRICA or any of its subregions and countries.
Language	The language(s) of the resource.	Documents; Communication Materials	Hold down the CTRL key to select/deselect multiple entries from the list. The search will combine the languages with the “OR” operator. The selection list contains only valid Languages found in the database.
Year	The year in which the resource was published.	Documents; Communication Materials	Search a range of years by selecting the beginning year in the From list and the ending year in the To list. To search a single year, select that year in both the From and To list. The selection list contains only valid Years found in the database.
Entry Date	Date resource was available on the website.	Documents; Photos; Communication Materials; Organizations/Websites	You can search only those dates in the selection list.
All Fields	· Abstract · Contact name for Communication Materials · Corporate author · Country / Region / Subregion · Description of Communication Materials & Organizations/Websites · EnglishTitle · Journal Title · Keywords · Language · Non-English Title · Notes · Personal author · Photo Caption · Photo City · Photo Credit · Photographer · Publication Information · Related Project	Each individual resource contains many of these fields; none contain all.
