11:15-12:00 Global Health Initiative at USAID - Christopher Bonner (USAID/GH/HIDN)

 

Significant Investment in Global Health Has Improved Outcomes

-Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization
-Global Fund for AIDS, Tuberculosis
 -Urgent Global Health Needs Remain
-HIV/AIDS

-U.S Governments’ Global Health initiative

Global Health Initiative (GHI) promotes a new business model-based on core principles:

            -Support country ownership

            -Implement a woman and girl-centered approach

            -Increase impact through strategic coordination and integration

-Strengthen and leverage key multilateral organizations, GHC partnerships and private sector engagement

-Build sustainability
-Improve metrics (M&E)

-Promote research and innovation to identify what works

GHI Initiatives Targets by 2015 (aggregate goals)

-HIV/AIDS, Child Health, Maternal Health, TB, NTDs, FP, Nutrition

GHI New Business Model

-Collaborative for impact, expand existing platforms to foster stronger systems and sustainable results

GHI Operational Plan

-Focusing on USG Investments to support goals, strategies and approaches, including strategic investments for GHI

-Working with government and partners to assess existing plans, health systems, financing gaps and capacity to identify gap needs

Conclusion- GHI has the opportunity to move USG global health programs to a new level of effectiveness, with a vision of long-term sustainability led by partner countries

-KM function based in Management Bureau > CIO office> KM Division

-KM Services included:

            -Development Experience Clearinghouse

            -KM Services Group

            -Library and References Services

Agency-wide KM Reference Group

Business Transformation Executive Committee (BTEC) developed KM strategy and IT strategic plan - empowered to meet and make decisions, has representatives from all bureaus

-Global Development Commons (part of original vision, envisioned to be a portal)

 

No KM culture at USAID; working on electronic management rules and regulations or agency-wide standards

Working on consensus about what should be collected and saved; no system of tools around the agency that everyone can use (case of funding)

 

A New Focus on KM
Internal wikis (Developedia); Internal blogs; new extranet (USAID AllNet)-portal to invite sharing; New DEC; Re-designed Intranets, Access to State Dept. Intranet (GHNET);

blogs; Intelink (Interlink.gov)-for partners to join the community - Not run by USAID, KM in the bureaus; Projects with KM mandate

-Media Materials Clearinghouse (MMC) converted to open source software called, e-prints

 
-7,000 materials currently available
 

-Marketing as a collection of development materials: communication materials through various sectors

 

-Must log-in and register materials, users will be prompted to complete fields: title, subject, date, etc. (Submission process completely electronic)

 

-Aiming to preserve and share materials submitted (PDF and .jgp formats for submission)

 

-Process materials uploaded by users and approved by CChange for publishing (interim process)

 

-Preserve materials beyond the life of the project, not a requirement like DEC is a requirement, way to disseminate your materials

 

Register option to received emails/notifications for your areas of interest as pertains to the site
