HIPNET - Health Information and Publications Network

HIPNet Meeting Notes - October 15, 2009

1. Presentation – “Web-based systems for gathering and sharing knowledge about improving health care" - Lani Marquez, University Research Co.

•    Lani Marquez from URC gave a presentation and discussion on “Web-based systems for gathering and sharing knowledge about improving health care." Her talk focused on interactive features of websites to engage target audiences in developing countries to share practical knowledge and experiences related to improving health care delivery.

•    Over the past several years, URC has been involved in developing three websites with the purpose of engaging users online through various features. URC has recently launched a new site for one of their projects and is working to improve upon their outreach efforts from their previous projects.

•    Lani shared URC’s experiences in this area and engaged HIPNet members in a discussion about their own experiences and limitations in trying to engage health care providers and program staff through websites. Lani discussed practices/ideas/innovations that worked well, and ones that did not.

•    Many members had their own valuable experiences to share with the rest of the group. Questions were raised about how to further elicit and share knowledge through websites, how to motivate project staff to get involved, and how to break through “technology fears” people have related to online communications.

2. Presentation – "Blogging with @globalhealth magazine" - Tina Flores, Global Health Council

•    Tina Flores from the Global Health Council gave a presentation and discussion on GHC’s GLOBAL HEALTH magazine's blog, and how the community can use social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter to share information and engage audiences.

•    Tina discussed how to increase the number of users and participants on each social networking site, and ways to build partnerships to rally around and to support each other on our respective social media sites.

•    While Tina was traveling, she blogged from the field from Oct 3-9. She asked for questions online, and showed HIPNet members the various responses she received to her questions. A good deal of outreach is important to let users know about your issues, and how you would like them to engage in a discussion or event. Once people know what to do and how, then chances are participation will increase if the topic is of relevance to the user. See www.globalhealthmagazine.com/guest_blog/

3. Presentation – “Social networking tools, tactics, and strategies" - Michaela Guerin Hackner & Suzanne Rainey, Forum One Communications.

•    Michaela Guerin Hackner and Suzanne Rainey of Forum One Communications gave a presentation and discussion on "Social networking tools, tactics, and strategies."

•    Their talk focused on how our global health community (organizations, projects, individuals) can leverage Facebook, Twitter, and blogs to engage people around the world on the issues we are passionate about.

•    Michaela also focused on one of her specific areas of specialty, which is how organizations can better tell their stories to inspire users to join communities, take action, donate, and participate online.
