Inexpensive Contraceptive Implant

Q:Contraceptive implants are extremely popular in our country. So whenever we get a new supply of implants they are used up in a few weeks. But the high cost of the implants limits the amount we can provide. I’ve heard there is a Chinese Implant that is considerably less expensive. Is that correct?

A:Yes. Sino-implant (II) (named Zarin® in much of Africa) is extremely similar to the 2-rod implant Jadelle®. It has been used extensively in China and Indonesia and some 6 million have been distributed. It has recently been registered in Kenya And Sierra Leone and FHI is actively helping with registration in quite a few countries (at the moment - Burundi, Dominican Republic, Columbia, Ethiopia, Ghana, Madagascar, Malawi, Pakistan, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe).
